DPS Interscholastic Handbook

These  policies, and procedures shall apply to all Denver Public Schools (DPS) student participants in interscholastic and intradistrict athletics. Participants include team members, team managers, and spirit athletes.  This Handbook draws from, and is meant to be consistent with, DPS and Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) policies, and applicable laws, and it is not meant to be comprehensive.  To the extent there are any conflicts with DPS Board or Administration policies, CHSAA policies, or state or federal laws and regulations, those laws, regulations, and policies supersede this handbook.  If your school also has its own handbook or guidelines, please refer to that document as well.  This handbook should be the foundation for school-specific guidelines.  Please reach out to the specific Middle School or High School Athletic Director for more information on specific guidelines, programming, tryouts, and official practices.

The goal is to provide a standard whereby participants can minimize risk factors involving injuries and general well being. Schools and society in general look to participants to demonstrate self-discipline, leadership, moral character, and good health habits. Students wishing to participate in athletic programs are required to meet standards of personal behavior and academic performance that are reasonably related to District purposes, including but not limited to ensuring that the participant is representative of the community, the District and the school’s ideals in matters of academic conduct, sportsmanship and citizenship.
