The Merrill Jaguars and the Sundevils from McAuliffe met two years ago in the City Baseball Championship. In that game, McAuliffe came out on top over a very scrappy team from Merrill. This season the Jaguars had to knock off the defending champion, Hamilton Huskies, during their 2018 playoff run to get back to the title game. The Sundevils had lost to the Huskies in the 2017 championship, so they were eager to get another crack at the title. Both teams had chances to score early on but some strong defensive play and pitching kept the game scoreless through the first two innings. McAuliffe broke the scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the third. Pitcher Zach Richardson drew a lead off walk and then scored on a deep ball hit by Chase Cavender that went off the glove of Jaguars defender George Smith. The Sundevils then added another run in that inning with an RBI single by Jameson Hoy to give them 2-0 lead. Merrill center fielder Connor Hasse, who played a terrific defensive game, started the Jaguars scoring in the top half of the fifth with a lead off single. Smith then connected with a long double that scored Hasse and their first run of the game. The Jaguars were able to add the crucial tying run in the final inning with an RBI triple by first baseman, Jake Johnston to send it into extra innings at 2-2. The boys from Merrill stayed hot at the plate in extra innings scoring the eventual winning run with Hasse’s infield single that scored pitcher Jonah Evans who led the inning off with a triple. The Jaguars’ defense and pitching held strong in the bottom half of the 7th to go on and win the 2018 City Championship 5-2. Congratulations to Coach Franklin and his team on a great championship season!!
