Denver North senior sensation Kayla Young capped an incredible career at Denver North High School by winning a CHSAA Cross Country State Championship over the weekend in Colorado Springs. Her time of 18:36 was eleven seconds ahead of second place finisher Quinn McConnell of Peak to Peak in what most in the crowd described as the greatest Cross Country race in Colorado history. Young, who was the 2014 and 2015 CHSAA State Runner-Up is considered one of the top high school distance runners in the country and backed it up with an incredible result at the CHSAA State Championships in 2016. Young was the first CHSAA Cross Country Individual State Champion from DPS since Cerake Geberkidane of Denver East won the crown in 2013. The win helped spark Denver North to a 5th place overall team finish which is the highest team finish in program history for the girls.
On the boys side, Denver East junior Harrison Scudamore finished in 5th place overall with the second fastest junior time in the state and Denver South sophomore Yonatan Kefle finished 14th place overall with the top sophomore time in the state, leaving plenty of optimism for the future of the sport in DPS.
