Denver Public Schools has qualified fifteen student athletes to the 2018 CHSAA State Wrestling Meet, led by League Runner-Up Abraham Lincoln, who qualified a total of five into the Meet. Leading the way for the Lancers will be 2018 Will Howard Award winner Elijah Grossetete, who brings a 40-10 overall record into the 4A 132 lb. Division. Abraham Lincoln junior Chris Felan, fresh off his 2018 DPS League Championship at 285 lbs. has also qualified at 4A with an impressive 34-6 Overall Record. Rounding out the Abraham Lincoln contingent will be Andrew Rosales (31-10 152 lbs.), Edgar Estrada (24-13 145 lbs.) and Juan Estrada (19-6 220 lbs.).
2018 Denver Public Schools League Champion Thomas Jefferson had an impressive Regional Tournament, qualifying three to the 4A CHSAA State Meet. Led by junior sensation Bobby Macias at 106 lbs., the Spartans have a legitimate chance to bring home an individual State Championship in 2018. Macias, who was the DPS League Champion at 106 lbs., will enter the 2018 CHSAA State Meet with a 41-1 Overall Record and the #2 Overall Seed at 106 lbs. Thomas Jefferson qualified an impressive freshman student athlete at 126 lbs., as Isaias Estrada will take his DPS League Title and 34-5 Overall Record into the bracket this weekend. Adding to their list of talented young student athletes that have qualified for the CHSAA State Meet will be sophomore Thomas Garnica, who has a 26-14 Overall Record at 220 lbs., and will be looking to make a splash at this year’s Meet.
Denver East will also bring a youthful squad to the 5A 2018 CHSAA State Wrestling Meet, as freshmen Armondo Garcia (32-11 106 lbs.) and Jose Cerda (36-9 113 lbs.) both qualified for the Event. Cerda, who was the 2018 DPS League Champion at 120 lbs., will drop down in weight class for this year’s CHSAA State Meet. 2018 DPS League Champion at 132 lbs. Anthony Martinez, will bring an impressive resume to the CHSAA State Meet at 132 lbs. With a 34-10 Overall Record, the Angels senior will look to place at this year’s Meet.
Three more 2018 DPS League Champions will participate at the 2018 CHSAA State Meet, as Roberto Lopez of Denver South (29-8 220 lbs.), Julian Herrera of John F. Kennedy (37-2 160 lbs.) and Ruben Agosto of Denver North (18-7 182 lbs.) all qualified. Agosto will step up a weight classification at the State Meet, as the senior was the DPS League Champion at 170 lbs. Herrera of JFK is an impressive senior for the Commanders who has only two losses on the season. Lopez, a junior from Denver South rolled through the 220 lb. Division at the DPS League Meet and will look to do the same at the State Meet this weekend. Additionally, John F. Kennedy senior D’Sean Wright (220 lbs. 20-12), who lost an incredible match in the Final of the DPS League Meet to fellow State Qualifier Roberto Lopez (Denver South), will make his first appearance at the CHSAA State Meet in 2018.
